Mains Farm’s story of listing their farm campsite on Pitchup

We started the business using the farm
as a holiday destination when we went out of milk. We were dairy farmers and we decided to go out of milk for various reasons, and me and Julie had the idea of
coming up with a small caravan site to supplement the income. The types of
accommodation we offer vary. We have caravans with electric hook-ups and water points, we have tents with electric hook-ups and water points, we have tents
without electric hook-ups we have camping pods and we have bunkhouses. We run the farm and the campsite together. Campsite and caravan
site go quiet in September, so from September through to March I class myself as a full-time farmer. From March to September, I’m a farmer with a caravan
and camp site. The situation before we started using Pitchup is that we had
our own website, and we used to take bookings off the website, and then Pitchup was recommended to me by a friend who has a campsite in the Lake
District, so we gave it a go and we’ve been very happy with the results. Pitchup has been a tremendous help since we’ve been a member, bringing new customers to the area to our business – a large number of new customers. And the other thing about Pitchup that we like is the reviews page: it gives people
an opportunity to put their reviews about what they like or don’t like about the site. We’ve had over 100 reviews now, and all apart from two have been very, very positive and we take notice of all the feedback good and bad to try and improve our service. We use the automated paying system obviously for deposits, which is a good thing because you find that once customers have paid a deposit, they do turn up. I think generally the cost of Pitchup is pretty
fair, because it is a significant amount of the cost, but that
means that they are committed to coming. The user portal’s very easy to use.
Julie – my wife – she does all of that actually, but she finds it very easy to
use and likes it. The customer service from Pitchup is
absolutely great. Julie has a telephone number she can phone.
She speaks to a girl called Suzanne who’s very, very helpful, and always on the end of the phone, and her and Julie have a very good working relationship. We definitely
find the process easy to take bookings when we have Pitchup, because it’s all
online and it means that people aren’t telephoning at funny times of day and
night, and it makes it a lot more relaxed and easy from our point of view. We’ve
definitely noticed an increase in booking requests without question since
we joined Pitchup. The percentage of bookings we take through Pitchup is
about 50% of our total bookings. We’re very happy with the experience using Pitchup: it’s been a great asset to our business and it’s a great tool for our business.
